Timaru Merino Stud NSW

Welcome to the Timaru Ultrafine merino stud, located on the south west slopes of NSW, and thank you for taking the time to visit our site.

The aim of our stud is to breed rams and ewes of the Saxon Merino breed which grow ultrafine and finely crimped wool. The Saxon Merino is Australia's best producer of this type of wool, with sheep producing within the range of 14 microns cutting 3 kilos, and sheep producing 17.5 microns cutting 6 kilos.

This ultrafine wool is extremely bright and white in colour, soft to handle and fine in diameter. Suitable for blending with other fibres such as silk and cashmere, it is prized by the textile industry for the highest quality and most expensive cloths it can produce, and is woven to become the beautiful 'next to skin' garments and fine men's suits.

Paolo Zegna, president of Italian clothing company Lanificio Ermenegildo Zegna, (Zegna makes suits for Tom Ford, Gucci and Dunhill), says, "It's incredible to think that wool fibres are so resilient and elastic that they can be bent 30,000 times without damaging them, or that they can be stretched up to a third of their length and then spring back into place." Zegna, usually associated with expensive suits and jackets, is also investing in wool as sports clothing, mostly using superfine merino wool from Australia.
