Timaru Merino Stud NSW

Timaru Merino Stud is a new ultrafine stud established in 2014 with the purchase of Ledgerton Stud Ewes and Rams.

While the Timaru stud is young, the Ledgerton breeding has been established over many decades commencing in 1867 when Charles Frederick Walker started the Ledgerton stud with "extra superfine" Saxon sheep.

To be selected for the stud flock, Ewes must have, as 2 year olds, a micron reading of 15.5 or better, a comfort factor of 99.7 or better and a curvature reading between 100 and 130. They are further selected for wool colour and style.

The stud flock is kept very small ( 65 ewes ) joined to a single ram each year, and the ram must have superior wool statistics to the Ewes.

All sheep bred on the property are tagged with electronic NLIS ID tags, and all sheep have their wool tested at their second shearing. Ewes and rams are tested thereafter to ensure the accuracy of subsequent selection. All sheep bred at Timaru are unmulesed. Rams are certified Brucellosis free and all sheep are inoculated for Ovine Johne's at marking.
